### Atlantic Herring Wholesale Prices Surge by 40.7% in Russia By early November 2026, the wholesale price of Atlantic herring in Russia reached 190 rubles per kilogram, marking a 40.7% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the National Fish Resources Agency ("Natsrybresurs"), as reported by Russian business daily "Kommersant". The sharp rise in wholesale prices began in September 2026, following a period of stability. Market participants attribute the price increase to seasonal fluctuations, supply and demand dynamics, and higher costs associated with fishing and processing. For instance, according to the Fisheries Union, as of November 1, 2026, Russian fishermen had caught 16,300 tons of herring, a 19.3% decrease from the previous year. Another factor contributing to the price hike is the competition between domestic and export supplies. From January to September 2026, exports of frozen herring increased by 19%, reaching 229,000 tons. Major buyers include China, South Korea, Japan, and African countries such as Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Benin, and Cameroon. On a positive note, the catch of Pacific herring this year has been successful. The volume of Pacific herring caught increased by nearly 30% year-on-year, reaching 612,100 tons. Experts clarify that although Atlantic and Pacific herring are different biological species, they share similar consumer characteristics and can partially substitute for each other in processing.
