Russia plans to revisit the extension of its self-employed tax experiment in 2027, according to Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Sazanov, as reported by TASS.

The special tax regime for self-employed individuals, known as the Professional Income Tax (PIT), is currently in effect until December 31, 2028. No decision has yet been made on whether to extend it beyond this date. Sazanov indicated that the government will return to this issue next year.

Sazanov had previously announced an upcoming discussion on the future of the PIT regime at the end of 2025. Therefore, the final parameters for the continued application of this special tax will be determined later.

According to the Federal Tax Service, the number of self-employed individuals in Russia has already exceeded 15 million. This tax regime allows citizens to legally earn income from independent activities without the need to file tax returns.

The tax rate is 4% for income received from individuals and 6% for income from organizations and individual entrepreneurs. The regime is available to individuals with an annual income of up to 2.4 million rubles. The tax is calculated only on actual income received: if no income was earned in a given month, no tax is due for that period.
