Russian Air Force Appoints General Alexander Chayko as New Commander

General Alexander Chayko has replaced General Viktor Afzalov as Commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, according to sources familiar with the personnel decision, as reported by RBC.

Afzalov himself took up the position in October 2023, succeeding former Commander Sergei Surovikin.

Before his current appointment, Chayko led the Eastern Military District and previously commanded Russian forces in Syria from 2019 to 2021. He was awarded the title of Hero of Russia in 2020.
