In the third quarter of 2025, the volume of cash in circulation in Russia increased by 659 billion rubles, or five times compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Central Bank, as reported by Izvestia.
More significant jumps were observed in the pandemic year of 2020 and in 2022, following the start of the special military operation.
This time, the increased demand for cash is explained by internet disruptions. In several Russian regions, mobile communication was restricted due to frequent drone attacks.
