Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law toughening responsibility for armed rebellion. The relevant document is published on the official website of the legal information. The Law comes into force on the day of its official publication.
Thus, the lower limit of punishment for armed rebellion will now be 15 years in prison. And if this results in the death of a person or other grave consequences, the penalty will be up to 20 years in prison with a fine of 500,000 rubles to 1 million rubles or a life sentence. Previously, the law provided for imprisonment for a term of 12 to 20 years with restriction of liberty for up to 2 years. The law provides for the exemption from criminal liability of a participant in the rebellion who voluntarily and promptly informed the authorities of information that would prevent further damage to the interests of the Russian Federation. The law also introduces a ban on parole for those convicted of armed rebellion or terrorism. A separate article of the law provides for liability for foreigners or stateless persons who provide consulting, financial or logistical assistance to the enemy in activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation. They will be punished with imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years with a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles.
